Sander van Berkel

Sander van Berkel was born in 1979 in Amersfoort and stared playing the cello at the age of seven under Frank Linschoten. He has also studied with René Berman, Michel Dispa and Paul Uyterlinde.
After graduating he continued to study under Professor Alexander Hülshoff at the Folkwang Hochschule and at the Orchesterzentrum NRW Dortmund.
He also attended masterclasses with Colin Carr, R. Adulescu, A. Smith and Quiriene Vierse.
He regularly freelances with various professional orchestras, is lead cellist with the Netherlands Symphonic Chamber orchestra ( and appears regularly as lead cellist with the RBO Sinfonia.
Since 2008 he has been a member of the Aeolus Cello Quartet ( who have given concerts in the Doelen in Rotterdam and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, amongst others.
He regularly gives chamber music concerts with the Botticelli Trio and the Gaudi Quartet, and has played in Germany, The Czech Republic, Ireland, China, Thailand, England, Spain, Colombia, Suriname and Brazil with various ensembles and orchestras.
Sander also plays concertos, for example the Cello Concertos by Elgar and Haydn, the Concerto Grosso for 3 Cellos by Penderecki, the Elegy by Faure, and Bruch's Kol Nidrei.
He plays on an instrument made by Jaap Bolink which is made available to him by the National Musical Instrument Fund.
